What is SilverSneakers?

With heart disease being the leading cause of death in America, it is incredibly important for seniors to stay active and keep their health in good shape. It is recommended that adults get 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week. These exercise minutes should be split up throughout the week in order to keep adults active and maintain heart health. This is where SilverSneakers comes into play.

The SilverSneakers program helps this initiative by allowing seniors access to gym memberships and exercise classes at no cost through many Medicare Advantage plans. Insurance companies often love providing SilverSneakers memberships because it can help reduce claim costs. If you are a senior looking to stay active, a SilverSneakers membership is a great option for you. SilverSneakers offers loads of features for seniors at all fitness levels to enjoy. There are tons of amenities for people over 65 with Medicare to enjoy through SilverSneakers. Today we are breaking down some of the most frequently asked questions regarding SilverSneakers.

What is SilverSneakers and what does it include?

SilverSneakers is a program that strives to provide healthy exercise options for adults 65 and older. By providing gym memberships and access to fitness-related events, SilverSneakers grants access to amenities and services that help keep seniors in good health. Over 17,000 gyms across the nation are available to those with SilverSneakers memberships. You can exercise at any one of these gyms for free with a SilverSneakers membership. Some gyms allow access to solely seniors with SilverSneakers memberships. It’s a great opportunity to stay fit and make friends in the process.

Class Options: SilverSneakers Flex Program

You can also take classes through SilverSneakers’ FLEX program, which provides classes exclusively for those enrolled in SilverSneakers, giving you a more personal & private exercise experience. The FLEX network offers 70 different types of classes that you can take outside of the gym. These classes are available at parks, churches, community centers and other locations. Some examples of classes offered through the FLEX program are: SilverSneakers Classic, SilverSneakers Circuit, SilverSneakers Cardiofit, SilverSneakers Yoga, SilverSneakers Splash and SilverSneakers Stability. Each of these programs focus on different areas of fitness to help you reach specific fitness goals.

Workout From Home with Silver Sneakers

With the current pandemic causing lots of gyms to close and making it unsafe for people to gather in public, we understand that going to the gym may not be the safest option for senior citizens at this time. It’s easy to get cabin fever when you are stuck inside all day. Luckily, SilverSneakers offers on-demand videos that you can watch from the SilverSneakers GO app in case you prefer to work out from home. A SilverSneakers membership comes with tons of resources for at-home workouts to help keep you healthy. This feature has definitely come in handy within the past few months! SilverSneakers also provides workout equipment so you can stay active from the safety of your home.

Even if you don’t have a SilverSneakers membership, you can still join in on the fun by watching SilverSneakers classes on their Facebook page. You can tune into live videos or watch pre-recorded ones. Check out the SilverSneakers’ Facebook page here!

BYOS: Bring Your Own Shoes

As ironic as it may seem, a SilverSneakers membership does not come with shoes. When taking a SilverSneakers class, you will need to bring your own shoes. There are plenty of features that SilverSneakers offers for seniors in order to help them stay healthy and active. Whether you are looking for a group fitness class, a gym membership, or on-demand workout videos, you can access all of these features with a SilverSneakers membership.
